Just read this in a thread posted in fanthropology regarding Real People Fanfic:

As a semi-non-sequitir, I am in love with this thread for being entirely about writing fiction about "real people" and not one person has said it's "morally wrong", it's "like rape", or "you wouldn't like it if it happened to you".

Christ, I spend too much time in fandom...

Love it, love it, love it!

Yeah, the whole RP-controversy thing still amazes me. People will write slash or het that's simply OUTRAGEOUS, but then they get their backs up over RP fanfic? Come on.

Christ, I spend too much time in fandom...

Yeah. Me, too, probably. And I'm damned glad I do.

I'll have to go read the thread, I guess...

I'm so used to people complaining about everything in fandom -- slash, mpreg, RP -- it's just nice to have a place to say "Eat Me"!

RPS has become my favorite form of fanfic. None of us really know a celebrity in person, so I see it more like casting our favorite celebs in fictional roles except they don't change their names.

THANK you!!!!! Yes!!!!

I use real events (shows, tours, whatever), I use the image of these people in my mind, and then I write things that I know good and well will never happen.

Absolutely. These people's names and images are in the public domain. They can't possibly chase down all the outrageous stories written about them. And it's all publicity anyway. Most celebs don't care what's written about them, unless it hits a little too close to home.

Is it "rape"? Well, I can't imagine Colin Farrell reading one of my stories and getting so emotionally upset that he'd need counseling or something. I prefer to think he might look at Russell Crowe in a whole new way if he read "Dust and Air" and then ran into Russell somewhere.

Oh, my, my! I just roared with laughter when I read that one!

Hell, if Kevin Richardson gets offended because I wrote about him fooling with his cousin and Tyke at the same time, then he can bite my butt! (Which might be nice, actually! Bring the dog and Brian along and they can bite my butt, too. LOL.)

Seriously, I'm sick of the whole RPS crappola. Have been for some time, too.

And, hot damn, I want your Gamble/Street mood thing. Every time I see it I just want it. Lordy.

Ummm, I think that would be "nip my butt" if it was Tyke!

Oh, yeah. We've had this discussion for nearly five years about Real People stuff. I'm so sick of all the groups and communities who look down their noses at it. Like some actor or singer should be treated with more respect than a literary character? Gimme a break. If Colin Farrell can pet a playmate's pussy (I meant her cat) and videotape it without realizing it would eventually fall into the hands of the world, he is too goddamned stupid to care if you write about him shagging his feeble brains out with Maximus from Gladiator!

And Justin Timberlake can come after me and sue me if he wants to. I'll send him my address and SS#. I look forward to standing up in court and saying, "Honestly, Your Honor, I thought it was true that Justin liked auto-eroticism when he and JC were in bed together."

Does anybody really believe that these celebrities are real people, anyway? Their lives are manufactured by magazines, entertainment shows and reality TV. The stuff we write about them is no more outrageous than the crap we read about them.

And, yes, I would like it if it happened to me. I've begged to have somebody use me as a character in a fanfic!

/End of rant.

Well said, as usual. It is silly, and come back to this post and see what I wrote about Colin/Maximus (Russell) above this thread.

Poor boy!

Well, now I'm roaring with laughter again. You're the funniest man alive. I swear.

Be sure to go and read what I said here--Okay?

Lordy.
