Okay, I've been a John McEnroe fan FOREVER
. I first saw him play in person as a junior, when he wasn't even considered one of the 'ones to watch' among his peers. When he was one of the world top players, I had the pleasure of watching him play Davis Cup singles and doubles here in Portland. I loved his fuzzy red hair and feisty manner. And later I appreciated his artistry, intelligence and sensitivity, and I thought his volatile temperment brought some fire to the game.
He was brutally honest in what can be a very phony atmosphere.
But what was exhilerating at 20-something is just not appropriate at nearly-50. McEnroe has now established himself as one of the voices of the game; he's one of the best commentators and the most credible pundits in tennis.
Carrying on like a kid (or an adult with no impulse control) at a seniors tennis match is not cute. It's not interesting. It's not anything but embarrassing for a person of McEnroe's stature, not to mention for the fans who have followed him all these years.
Johnny Mac, grow up. Or better yet, take your own All-Bran challenge and see if a good poop would improve your ill humor.
Anyway, speaking of tennis, now that Nadal officially has the #1 ranking, he's the top seed at next week's US Open. It's the first time he's been seeded first at a Grand Slam tournament! (Hopefully he'll live up to that seeding.)
