Okay, just a brief rant to say how I always felt disappointed by the story Little Women
. I read the book as a little girl, and I've seen four or five versions of it on film, the latest with the fine Christian Bale playing a particularly lovely Laurie.
I always wanted Jo and Laurie to end up together. In many versions I blamed Laurie for marrying Amy after Jo turns him down. In the Winona Ryder/Christian Bale version, I felt actual pain for Laurie when Jo says no. He clearly ends up marrying Amy because it's the only thing that will save him from a wasted live of womanizing and getting wasted. (I guess it wouldn't be reasonable for him to become a 19th Century Batman.)
I've tried to like Professor Baer. I've tried to care that two or three more books were written about Jo and her professor's life after marriage. I can't get past the part about her sewing the buttons back on his vest. It completely skeeved me as a girl, and it still makes me feel just . . . ugh.
She should have been with Laurie, "bashing around London." They could have been great friends, okay lovers and passionate combatants until the day they "murdered each other."
After all, Laurie needed a good man. And Jo March was as close as he was going to get.
