Today it was announced that the Vancouver fireworks show has been cancelled. Lack of funding, people's unwillingness to give a donation at the gate of the event and obviously just complete frustration on the part of the trust that oversaw production were the primary reasons. I loved how the exec of the trust referred to the community's "sense of entitlement" to get the event for free.
People, nothing good comes for free. I'm not sure why people think they shouldn't have to pay in some way for the things worth having.
This has been a wonderful event for 50 years, and I never miss the televised version. It's a huge loss.
The Portland Jazz Festival, a five-year event, has also folded it's stages. Same basic issue: lack of funding.
I fear there will be more to come. Don't let it be us.
