On October 30, just after I posted this entry
, I was sitting at the stop two blocks from our office, waiting to turn, gazing idly up the hillside road in front of me, which was coated with colored leaves. As I watched, a huge cougar walked slowly across the road and disappeared into the brush, followed by a slightly smaller bobcat.
I was talking to Charlie on the cell phone at the time, and I just started yelling. "There's a cougar! There's a bobcat!"
There were two cars behind me, so I had to turn, but I kept yelling. I was shocked.
Now there have been plenty of cougar sightings in our west hills, but this was two blocks from my office! Admittedly the zoo isn't far from us, but wouldn't they have to announce if a couple big cats were loose and wandering around?
I was practicing my Sarah Palin voice at the time, and I immediately made a joke about being a cougar myself.
Now, considering ths summer I saw a wolf jump out of the brush near the highway and take down some small animal, and just a week later there was a story about how wolves had come back to Oregon, it feels like either I'm having an indian totem type spiritual experience, or the critters are encroaching on my world.
Since I spent much of my childhood as Chico the Misunderstood Coyote, then read and re-read the book Yellow Eyes
about a cougar, these sightings are either a natural and fitting experience or an alarming omen.
